Attending your first vso Concert?

Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. If you have any additional questions, please contact our administrative office at 956-661-1615 or hello@valleysymphony.org.

  • WHERE DOES VALLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORM?

The Valley Symphony Orchestra’s Masterworks concerts take place at the McAllen Performing Arts Center at 801 Convention Center Blvd, McAllen, TX 78501. Our chamber concerts and other performances and events take place at different locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Check out our CONCERTS page for all the details!

  • WHERE DO I GET MY TICKETS?

Season tickets are purchased through our administrative office and will be sent approximately four weeks before the first Masterworks concert. If purchased closer to the first concert, they will typically be available at our patron services table at the entrance to the McAllen Performing Arts Center.

Single tickets to the season’s Masterworks concerts are sold through the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office, either ONLINE, by phone at 956-681-3801, or in person on the east side of the building. The Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 10am to 5pm and again at 6pm on the day of the concert.

Tickets to chamber concerts or other events are sold directly by the VSO. Links to purchase will be provided on our CONCERTS page when they go on sale.

  • DO YOU OFFER ANY SPECIAL PRICE DISCOUNTS?

Yes! $20 tickets (+fees, limited to two per person) are available for our Masterworks concerts to students, educators, first responders, and currently enlisted military service members. Those tickets need to be purchased in advance and in person at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box office. Valid ID required.

$15 + fees rush tickets (limit one per person and based on availability) to all Masterworks concerts are available starting at 6pm on the day of the concert, also at the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office. This is an amazing way to get a great seat at a great price.

Our season ticket holders also receive early access and discounts to chamber concerts and events, usually sent via an email discount code in advance of the general public on sale. Another perk of being a season ticket holder!

  • MAY I BRING MY CHILDREN?

You are welcome to bring any children old enough to enjoy the performance. We do ask that you avoid bringing babies-in-arms, and that you make sure your children are seated next to you and behaving appropriately to allow for a focused and enjoyable concert experience for those around you. All children must have a ticket, regardless of age.

  • WHAT IF I LOSE MY TICKETS?

If you lose your tickets to a VSO Masterworks concert and you are a season ticket holder, please contact the VSO administration office at 956-661-1615 or hello@valleysymphony.org. As long as we are given at least 48-72 hours notice from the start of a concert, we should be able to instruct the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office to reprint your tickets and hold them at will call.

If you cannot locate your ticket(s) and it is much closer to concert time, please visit the McAllen Performing Arts Center Box Office that evening and request a reprint. We would suggest having your section, row and seat # handy.

Our chamber concerts and other events are ticketed directly and we will be able to pull up your records when you arrive.

  • WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE FOR THE CONCERT?

We recommend arriving at least 30-45 minutes before the posted start time of the concert. This will give you adequate time to find parking, go through security, purchase refreshments, and locate your seat.

Doors for Masterworks concerts open one hour prior to start time. Doors for chamber concerts or other events, opening time will vary.

  • WHAT IF I ARRIVE LATE?

Late arrivals to Masterworks concerts will be seated in the back of the mezzanine or balcony section and then allowed to take their ticketed seat location after intermission. Admission will be at the direction of the ushers and/or house manager. Please understand that this policy is in place as not to disturb the conductor, music director, or your fellow patrons.

  • WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Most people wear “dressy casual” clothes to our concerts, but you will see everything from jeans and tee shirts to cocktail dresses and everything in between. While we do encourage you to dress up and have a special night out, the most important part is that you show up and have fun! Please be considerate of those in the audience who may have allergies and/or multiple chemical sensitivities and refrain from wearing strong perfume, cologne, or other scented products.

  • HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL PERFORMANCE?

Most of our Masterworks concerts are approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes long, including one 15-20 minute intermission. The length of other concerts and events vary depending on the program and venue.

  • WHEN DO I CLAP?

Although our musicians don’t object to applause at any time, most audiences wait until the end of an entire piece to clap. If you’re not sure when a piece ends, just check your program. Beneath the name of each piece, it will list the piece’s movements, or sections. The audience usually waits until the last movement is over to clap.

If you’re still not sure, you can keep an eye on the conductor or musician that is leading (in the case of a chamber concert or non-conducted group). When the piece is over, they will put their arms or instrument down and turn to the audience. Or, you can just wait until the clapping begins and then join in!

  • WHAT IF I HAVE TO COUGH?

It’s always a good idea to bring cough drops with you to help avoid or control coughing during a performance. If possible, unwrap your cough drop during a break in the music. If you begin to cough a lot, it is acceptable and appropriate to exit the concert hall or performance space. You will be allowed to return to the performance during the next pause or break.

  • MAY I TAKE PHOTOS OR SHOOT VIDEO DURING THE PERFORMANCES?

Out of respect to your fellow audience members, the conductor, musicians, and guest artists, photography and video recording is not permitted during VSO performances.

  • MAY I BRING MY CELLPHONE?

If you bring your cell phone or other electronic devices be sure to turn them off before the performance begins.  This will enhance your ability to fully engage with the performance in the hall.  It also is a great excuse to disconnect from the demands of the outside world for a couple of hours.

  • WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

You don’t need to know a lot about the music in advance. In fact, it’s fun to discover something new and have something to look into after the concert. Notes on the works will be provided in your program, if available, or a quick internet search beforehand can provide a lot of information.

What is most important is to come to the concert, experience the excitement of a live performance, and relieve the stresses of everyday life!
